Aid used in the right way gives life and hope
While affluence in the Western world makes us increasingly ill, poverty in other parts of the world robs people of all hope. - We can change that!
Admittedly, things are not getting easier for us either. But when we talk to our partners in Sri Lanka, we hear about a dimension of despair that we - thank God - cannot really imagine here..
The crises that have afflicted our world in recent years have their most terrible effect on the people who have been deprived of any opportunity to help themselves.
Programs by governments and large aid organizations usually operate on the watering-can principle and are usually as well-intentioned as they are ineffective.
There is no substitute for the direct, flexible and targeted help provided by small organizations that are in close personal contact with highly committed and motivated local people.
freiRaum e.V. is such an organization.
In Sri Lanka in particular, we have a situation where an extremely large number of people who just a few years ago had a completely normal life in an up-and-coming country are now on the streets without any income due to the various crises.
Here we have started to help on different levels:
Thanks to the help of our donors, our partners on the ground were and are able to accomplish the logistical feat of procuring larger contingents of basic foodstuffs and distributing them according to an effective system in order to ensure the survival of as many as possible.
The same applies to medicines that are no longer available or affordable in Sri Lanka, as well as in hardship cases for urgently needed operations.
A great ray of hope is our self-help farming project, which was started just early enough to now yield abundant yields of rice and vegetables several times a year. This gives countless people and their families not only a livelihood, but also a perspective.
This perspective naturally includes support for children in terms of education. Without tutoring, it is not possible to successfully complete school in Sri Lanka. Our local partners see to it that children from the poorest families can participate in private tutoring.
In individual cases, we also support particularly talented and motivated young people with a scholarship to enable them to train or study.
The recently launched family-, children's- and youth camps for the poorest of the poor have proved extremely valuable. Here, people can learn that their lives are precious and worth living, and that they can make an important contribution to improving the situation for those around them as well
All this takes place in one of the most beautiful countries on earth! If you are interested not only in this country but also in its people, we can offer you an individual travel experience far away from package tourism but amidst an atmosphere of meaningful, life-changing and inspiring activities.
You can find more details about all of the above here on our homepage.
We would be pleased to welcome you there - or perhaps directly on site in Sri Lanka.
